Private Lessons

Private lessons at RSM are catered to each student’s goals, style of learning, and skill level. These one-on-one sessions fill gaps in your musical knowledge whether it’s theory, ear training, reading music, improvisation, writing music, etc. Private lessons can also help assess your level before starting one of RSM’s programs as well as provide support in learning material while involved in a program.

Teaching Method & Curriculum

RSM does not use one specific teaching method or curriculum as every student has different goals and a different way of learning. We use a combination of method books and materials to cover theory, sight reading, ear training, and technique for a well-rounded approach to learning how to play and learn music. The instructors at RSM provide each solid with a well rounded solid music foundation and each have a specific skill set / speciality such as songwriting, jazz, improvisation, classical, metal, and more.

Our teachers tailor lessons to the needs and learning style of their student, and will ask students what songs or styles they are interested in learning. If you have any questions about which teacher is best fit for you, reach out to the front desk and we can provide you a recommendation. RSM has longterm relationships with students so it’s important to find the right teacher for you.

Progress & Practice

We recommend consistent practice for all of our students at least 4 days per week. Length of practice can depend on what specifically you’re working on at the moment, but minimum recommended times are 15-30 minutes for beginners and 30-45 minutes for intermediate. Of course you are always encouraged to spend more time with your instrument! However, the most important thing to remember is that consistency is key to progress more so than having “long” but scattered practice sessions.

Recommend Lesson Frequency

Most of our students take lessons on a weekly basis. Others who like to work on multiple instruments will take two lessons per week, and some who may have a busy schedule will book every other week or “one-off” lessons. We recommend weekly lessons, especially for beginner and intermediate levels, because consistency is key!

Group Lessons

The group lessons we offer are for intermediate students who are ready to take it to the next level. We have band programs of all ages and levels, vocal performance training, production classes, summer camps, and group workshops throughout the year. If you’re new to an instrument, we don’t recommend group lessons as learning the basics of your instrument requires individual attention from a teacher, and every student learns at a different pace and in a different way.

If you are interested in learning alongside like-minded students and getting involved with our music community, we have several group programs and workshops happening year-round! Reach out for more information to get involved.
